Design and Plant a Perennial Border

Perennial Border grown by Dawn and Jackie. During the cold, dark, quiet days of January, let’s design a perennial flower border. Depending on the size chosen, this project may be quick or take more than a year to complete.

 We will begin at the very beginning.  Decide where to locate the new bed.  It may be an addition or simply changing a border that is not attractive during all twelve months, or one which needs revitalization or even a new bed from the ground up. Continue reading

Plant and Prune, it’s Nearly Spring

Many have begun cutting perennials back and limbing UP trees. I still see a few new hat racks made from once-lovely trees. This primitive method of topping trees is nothing less than barbaric. 

Pruning trees by topping was taught in schools 75 years ago, and has long been proven an incorrect way to prune trees.  Trees to remove are those that interfere with power lines, are diseased or growing close to the house. Continue reading
